Visiting Delaware
Delaware - a small state but a big destination. With only three counties, Sussex, Kent and New Castle, travel is easy from the urban offerings of Wilmington to fun on the sand at Dewey Beach. With spring and summer, Delaware’s events and activities heat up for vacations, weekend getaways and hometown fun. Discover the beauty of Delaware venturing along the Delaware Wine and Ale Trail. Keep that training in gear with organized and competitive bicycle rides, and walks and runs along the Delaware Shore. Venture through Delaware this spring and summer, and be sure to stop along your journeys and enjoy the First State’s history and heritage.
This is the season to travel the Delaware Wine and Ale Trail. Venture across Delaware to visit the state’s 13 breweries and wineries. Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, with locations in Wilmington and Newark, is a good place to start. Head south to Bear for a visit to Stewart's Brewing Company, and then on to Fordham and Old Dominion Brewing Companies in Dover. On a visit to Dewey Beach, be sure to spend some time at Nassau Valley Vineyards in Lewes and Dogfish Head Brewing in Rehoboth Beach. Discover Delaware’s own craft beers and boutique wines this season.
Get your spring and summer training in gear at the 23rd Annual Ocean to Bay Bike Tour. Hosted by the Bethany - Fenwick area Chamber of Commerce, the race start and finish is in Bethany Beach, just 10-miles south of Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach. Participants choose from 5, 30 or 50-mile courses, with everyone finishing at the post race party with live music, food and activities. Bring your helmet and take a ride along Delaware’s eastern shore, the 2012 Ocean to Bay Bike Tour is April 21st.
The Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, the former site of the du Pont family gunpowder works, is set on 235 acres along the banks of Wilmington’s Brandywine River. A beautiful destination, the museum includes restored mills, the worker's community and the du Pont ancestral home and gardens. A new exhibit for 2012, “The American Eagle: Symbol of Freedom and Enterprise to the du Pont Family” is on display in the Eleutherian Mills through the end of the year.
It's time to plan a trip to the beach, and Delaware has great options. Dewey Beach along with Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island make Sussex County a wonderful warm weather destination. The spring and summer calendar of events includes Dewey Beach’s Spring Sidewalk Sale in May, as well as the 2012 DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk, and DE Highway One Pictures 5K. Runners count on 5K or 10K events in Dewey Beach every month through summer. Be sure to mark July 26th on the calendar for the 2012 Best of Delaware Party and bring the family to the beach on August 4th for the 34th Annual Dewey Beach Sandcastle Contest.
